Innovative Fuel Cell/Battery-Based Hybrid Zero-Emission Power System for Maritime Transport

Project 2024/392269 - Innovation Norway

The objective of the various activities within this project is to enhance collaboration between Romanian and Norwegian institutions. Simultaneously, the project aims to develop and implement innovative fuel cell technology solutions for ships to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote more sustainable, energy-efficient navigation. By integrating fuel cells into ships’ propulsion and energy systems, the project seeks to demonstrate both the technological and economic viability of this solution, contributing to the shift toward low-impact, environmentally friendly shipping.

The project will evaluate the latest advancements in green propulsion technologies, with a particular focus on hydrogen fuel for specific ships operating in Nordic and Romanian waters. Activities will include training, capacity building, awareness initiatives, networking, and the exchange of knowledge, technology, and best practices. This will lead to the development and testing of fuel cell prototypes designed for maritime environments, showing substantial reductions in CO2 and other pollutant emissions compared to traditional propulsion systems. The project will also assess the costs associated with deploying fuel cells and evaluate their long-term cost-effectiveness for maritime operators.

To encourage the broad adoption of these technologies, project outcomes will be promoted within the shipping industry and to policymakers. The initiative is part of the broader effort to develop green technologies for both new ships and existing vessels awaiting retrofitting with hydrogen fuel cells and hybrid zero-emission power systems, as outlined in the Bilateral Cooperation in the Green Transition call for projects.
